ST. PETER’S TELUGU CHURCH

The history of the Congregation dates back to 1938 when four families began worshipping at No.2 Lavelle Road. Early members were migrants employees of Survey of India from Nandyal and worshipped in a small room provided by Survey of India. They were from high Anglican tradition of SPG. As the numbers grew Rev. Sam D. George of St. Luke’s church helped them to associate with other Anglican Churches viz. St. Paul’s and All Saint’s and the members were given privilege to have baptisms and marriages at St. Mark’s Cathedral. Soon a committee was formed who held their meetings in Cubbon Park.

With the arrival of Canon Lazarus from Nandyal in 1947 the congregation received a tremendous boost. Canon Elphick the then Warden of Bishop Cotton Boys School gave permission to conduct worship service in the School Chapel. In 1948 Sr. Carol Graham founder member of Sisterhood in Church of South India who was fluent in Telugu started serving the Congregation. Later the Congregation was merged with then Mysore Diocese of CSI.

In 1947, the Rt. Rev. Gurushantha, Bishop of the then Mysore Diocese confirmed 15 candidates and named the congregation “St. Peter’s Telugu Congregation”. In 1978 the present day land was allotted to this congregation and the same year foundation stone was laid. Work on a Church building began in 1985 and was completed in 1989 since then the congregation started worshipping here in a small building as “St. Peter’s Telugu Church”.

As the number increased a shelter on the south side as an extension was added in 2004. Since then with multinationals establishing their companies especially software in Bangalore, the congregation has grown by leaps and bounds in number and a bigger and permanent structure was the need. The proposal for present building was initiated in 2005 and foundation stone was laid the same year. The first phase with basement and multipurpose hall was completed and dedicated in 2014. During the construction period the congregation worshipped at United Mission School Hall. Work on the second phase commenced in July 2017 and the new Church building was dedicated on 3rd February 2019.
